On May 24, at 3:30 pm, in the Aula Magna of University of Rome 3, the results of the work carried out in recent years by the Somali Research Center of the University of Rome 3, under the project “Somalia Archive ” will be presented.
The “Somalia Archive” project aims at preserving the memory of the past and at contributing to the reconstruction of the present of Somalia, digitizing and making available online its digital heritage, primarily through the ArcAdiA platform, the DSpace repository of University of Rome 3 (http://dspace-roma3.caspur.it/handle/2307/723).
However, to ensure the availability of this heritage also in areas where there is no internet connection, 4Science has implemented a new version of the Somalia Archive, to be used offline. The offline version optimizes access to and use of the collection by presenting access, search and consultation paths in Italian, Somali and English. The open source DSpace software (http://www.4science.it/dspace/), also used to manage the online archive, was updated to the latest version available and made executable directly from external devices.
A second completely static version was also designed and built to be run on old-fashioned computers. This version will be distributed to major educational (schools, universities) and cultural heritage dissemination and conservation centers of the Somali Federal Republic and to the regions of Somali language and culture of the Horn of Africa.
